About Us
Found in the heart of Old Mandeville on the Northshore of Lake Pontchartrain, McClain’s Pizzeria is a locally owned and operated business. McClain and Maggie Balmer pride themselves in their house-made recipes and fresh ingredients. The dough and marinara are made from scratch daily. The dressings and sauces are house-made as well.
Our History
The family restaurant was started in Washington state in the mid-70s by McClain’s parents and sister, Harry “Pop” Balmer, Nancy “Nana” Harris, and Darrel. The first location was called The Harris Avenue Deli. Pop and Nana converted a bagel recipe into a pizza recipe for dough. In the early 80s, Pop and Nana opened the first Village Pizza. Village Pizza was The Northwest Readers poll as “Best Pizza in the State of Washington” and Pacific Northwest Magazine, “Favorite Pizza”. Also featured in Pizza Today Magazine, the Washington location appeared in the opening credits of the TV show, Northern Exposure.
Our Legacy
Although the original location is no longer owned by the family, McClain has been using the same recipes since he opened his own Village Pizza in 1997. Over the years, the location and name has changed, but remain award winning and successful as ever. Most recently they were featured in Sophisticated Woman as “Northshore’s Best Pizza” for 2015, 2016, 2018, and 2020. McClain's Pizzeria was also voted best pizza of 2022 by Edge of The Lake Magazine. McClain and Maggie plan on expanding their operation and passing the recipes and great pizza on to their children.
